The locations for Regional finals have been confirmed for the upcoming season of F1 in Schools. Cork IT will be hosting the Southern Regional and the location for the regional in the North West has yet to be confirmed ... but my money's on Sligo!!.... all will be happening in March 2012!!

Bernie Ecclestone, President and CEO, Formula One Management, presented the newly crowned 2011 F1 in Schools™ World Champions with the trophy which he commissioned especially for this global educational initiative, meeting the winning Australian team, Pentagliders, in the paddock at the Singtel Formula 1™ Singapore Grand Prix.

The 2011 F1 in Schools World Champions were delighted to meet Ecclestone and receive their trophy, with Team Manager of Pentagliders, Amy Winter, saying, “We are so proud to have been presented with our trophy by Mr Ecclestone, who is such a legendary personality in Formula 1. Visiting the paddock at the Singapore Grand Prix was an awesome prize anyway, but this moment is truly special for all of us and I don’t think we’ll ever forget it!

“When Mr Ecclestone held the trophy above my head I was a bit worried that he might drop it, as it is very heavy, but luckily he didn’t. We gave him one of our merchandising items, which was a stress ball in the shape of Australia and suggested that he could use it whenever he was stressed. I’m sure he has a high pressure job, so maybe he will use it. As well as presenting the trophy to us he autographed our winning F1 in Schools model car and our portfolio, so these will be very cherished items now. We have had such an exciting time, it’s been amazing.”

Bernie Ecclestone has been a long-time supporter of F1 in Schools, commissioning an impressive glass trophy to be given to the World Champions each year. Last year Ecclestone visited the F1 in Schools World Finals event when it was held in Singapore, saying of the programme, “It is super, super for the kids, it’s really great and it gets them interested in Formula One and a lot of adults as well are asking what this (F1 in Schools) is all about.” He was also supportive of the initiative’s focus on engineering, saying, “It’s magic. These guys will go somewhere, for sure,” and he also believes they will end up in Formula One, adding, “Yes, for sure, absolutely, they get exposure, people know them and they will get a good position.”

A dream realised - from F1 in Schools to Red Bull Racing

F1 in Schools past competitior Matt Cruickshank has just landed a fantastic year long work placement in Red Bull Racing - all thanks to his F1 in Schools experience!!

“I wouldn’t have got this far without F1 in Schools,” says Matt Cruickshank, a 20 year-old student from Sydney, Australia, who has realised his ambition to work in Formula One racing. “My experience in the programme led me to secure a work placement at Red Bull Racing and I’m having the most amazing year with this world championship-winning team.”

Mark represented Australia at the 2008 F1 in Schools World Finals in Malaysia, where his team finished third and also picked up the best-engineered car award.

Twenty-four Teams To Compete for Chance to Represent Ireland in F1 in Schools™ World Finals

Twenty-four teams will compete in the National Finals of the F1 in Schools™ Competition on Thursday April 7, 2011 in Griffith College Dublin. The winning team will go on to represent Ireland at the F1 in Schools™ Technology Challenge World Championships in Malaysia this September, where they will compete against national winners from 31 countries from around the world.

The F1 in Schools™ challenge is a global competition that challenges students to design, build and race model Formula 1 cars powered by compressed air canisters. The teams are judged on car speed, as well as supporting evidence of their design, verbal presentation and display stand. The competition, powered in Ireland by the Irish Computer Society, is a response to a recognised skills shortage in computing and engineering, with technology courses having experienced a significant decline in CAO applications over the past number of years.

Work for the 2011 Finals commenced last September with schools registering their interest in competing. Intense competition followed with 600 students representing 150 second-level schools from across the country battling their way through the various stages of the competition to reach the National Finals.

“The commitment showed by both the students and their teachers is incredible. The teams have been working on their cars and projects since September and it really shows when they come together for the National Finals” said Jim Friars, CEO of the Irish Computer Society (ICS).

“It’s wonderful to see how enthusiastic and creative the students are when it comes to modelling and planning their cars and how much they enjoy using technology to design them.”

The aim of the F1 in Schools™ Competition is to promote technology use among second-level students and to encourage students to pursue science, engineering and technology courses at third-level.

Among the participants in the 2010 F1 in Schools™ Competition:

· 82 per cent of participants have said that the competition has encouraged them to think about careers in engineering and computing;

· Among those studying a technology subject at school, 96 per cent said that the F1 in Schools competition will help them with their school work;

· 60 per cent of Design and Communications Graphics teachers felt the F1 in Schools™ competition was “Extremely helpful” in preparing students for their schoolwork; and

· 76 per cent of students who took part felt that they were more interested in technology than they had been before they started the competition.

For teams submitting a team website this year we will be requesting the URL for your website in advance of the regional final. The websites will be judged prior to the Regional final. Please have all URL’s with F1 in Schools (f1@ics.ie) Monday 28^th February 2011. The website is an optional part of the competition. However in order to score in the ‘High’ category in the Use of CAD and ICT a team must have a project website (see Rules and Regs, Marking Criteria).

Happy New Year!

Over the coming weeks teams should be perfecting their final designs for submission to their Make Centre for manufacture of their cars.

Don't forget to go to our website (www.F1inSchools.ie) and go to Resources/Software there’s a video but more importantly there’s a SolidWorks Tutorial that includes a chapter on COSMOS FloWorks – all specifically put together for the F1 in Schools project. COSMOS will analyse your design and show areas of turbulence in your design to allow further modifications to the design.

Details of your teams Make Centre and deadline for submission have been emailed onto your teacher. Keep to this deadline - if your design's not submitted on time we can't guarantee it will be manufactured!!

Don't leave it until the last minute get working on your five page Qualifying Stage plans. You can download exemplar plans here to give you an idea on what to base yours on.

Your plan should consist of the following:

Introduction (1 page)
Research (1 page) - A look at the different ideas behind making your car the fastest.
Design (1-2 pages) - Pencil sketch will suffice, but 3D CAD more advantageous
Resources planning (1-2 pages) - Outline plan to include, for example: timeline, budget, marketing etc..

Plans should have no more than 5 A4 pages, any plans which exceed the maximum of 5 pages will only have the first 5 pages looked at. The cover of your document is not counted in these 5 pages.

Team Unitus Racing with Jenson Button

Tears of joy and tumultuous applause accompanied the announcement of USA winning the F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 supported by LG. The world champions, Unitus Racing from James Madison Middle School and Southeast High School, were delighted, and surprised, to be crowned with the title at this sixth World Finals event, after beating 24 student teams in this prestigious educational Formula One linked challenge.

The team were congratulated by Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver, Jenson Button, after the awards ceremony, adding to the special day for the American team. Earlier this afternoon Formula One boss, Bernie Ecclestone, a long-time supporter of F1 in Schools visited the event to view first-hand the competition.

Unitus Racing Team Manager, Amanda Clark, and her team mates, Niemann Pest, Mark Nanney, Tony Griffin, Brandon Miranda and Yatrik Solandi had made a long trip of nearly 24 hours travelling to claim their historic victory, celebrating as the first country to have won the title for a second time. “We’re all a bit overwhelmed and can’t really put what this means to us into words”, said Clark. “This was a total surprise. Our goal was to be in the top ten, as we knew we had been consistent in the various different judging categories. At the end, when they called the third and second placed teams we had no idea that we had won, we thought we had come fifth. It just shows what hard work and determination can do, as well as following a dream.”

Bernie Ecclestone goes racing again... and Wins!!

Bernie Ecclestone returned to racing today, putting his reaction time to the test in an F1 in Schools race at the F1 in Schools World Finals Singapore 2010 supported by LG. Ecclestone visited the event at the Conrad Centennial Hotel in Singapore, taking time out of his busy schedule to see first-hand the work of the F1 in Schools World Finals teams.

Bernie Ecclestone has been a long-time supporter of F1 in Schools World Finals, with a trophy which he commissioned especially for the initiative given to the World Champions each year. Ecclestone was given a tour of some of the team’s pit displays by Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools, before taking on the F1 in Schools boss in a head to head race with LG branded cars on the specially designed track used by the students as part of the competition. Ecclestone beat Denford with the faster reaction time to win the race.

Of F1 in Schools Ecclestone said, “It is super, super for the kids, it’s really great and it gets them interested in Formula One and a lot of adults as well are asking what this (F1 in Schools) is all about.” He was also supportive of the initiative’s focus on engineering, saying, “It’s magic. These guys will go somewhere, for sure,” and he also believes they will end up in Formula One, adding, “Yes, for sure, absolutely, they get exposure, people know them and they will get a good position.”

Denford said of Ecclestone’s visit to this year’s F1 in Schools World Finals, “We are very privileged to have the support of Bernie Ecclestone and although he has met F1 in Schools World Champions in the past, this is the first time that he has had the chance to see the initiative in action and to view for himself the work of the students. I know he was very impressed with the standard of work that he saw, the lengths that the teams have gone to in their pursuit of success and the overall professionalism of the event.

Irish Teams travel tomorrow to Singapore for F1 World Finals

Three Irish teams will tomorrow travel to Singapore to vie for the Title of World Champions. There they will compete against teams from around the world for this prestious title.

Team Blink from St. Ailbe’s Secondary School, Tipperary Town. National Champions 2009, will be representing Ireland at the World Championships in 2010 Singapore. Team members: Étaín Ryan, Matthew Ryan, Daniel Bresnan, Dereck Withero.

Students from around the world are putting the finishing touches to their Formula One cars in preparation for the 2010 F1 in Schools World Finals, which is being held in Singapore next month. This global educational challenge, which is privileged to have the support of the Formula One fraternity, draws together the best young engineers, business minds and designers, competing for the coveted Bernie Ecclestone World Champions trophy as well as Automotive and Motorsport Engineering scholarships to City University London.

The diversity of teams competing reflects the far reaching success of this initiative, with students from Europe, Asia, Australasia and North America all represented. The competition has no boundaries, with students studying at independent and state high schools travelling to Singapore.

This year there are three teams representing Ireland competing for the title

Yas Marina Circuit becomes centre of excellence for F1 in Schools

Yas Marina Circuit and Richard Cregan, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit and a patron of F1 in Schools in Ireland, will be rolling out the F1 in Schools Challange throughout the United Arab Emirates.

The circuit will host an invitational national final of the competition in early June, which will see a UAE school team qualify for the world finals in Singapore in September. Yas Marina Circuit is setting up the F1 in Schools Centre to enable visitors to the circuit to experience all aspects of the F1 in Schools challenge, making it the only Grand Prix track to have such a facility.

We wish them all the best and look forward to meeting the UAE National Champions at World Championships in Singapore in September.

Team Govannon Racing from Dundalk Grammar School, was declared the National Champions of the 2010 F1 in Schools Technology Challenge, powered in Ireland by Irish Computer Society at the National Finals held in Griffith College Dublin yesterday.

Michael O'Neill Team Manager, Niall Carroll, Graphic Designer, Jack Farrell, Resource Manager, Steven Butterly, Manufacturing Engineer, and Conor Clarke, Manufacturing Engineer fought off fierce competition from 27 finalist teams from all over Ireland to claim the National Title and Trophy as well as the opportunity to represent Ireland in the 2010 World Championships next autumn, in Singapore. The overall winners share the €2,000 in prize money.

A big congratulations to all teams involved. The judges' feedback was fantastic!

Praise from F1 in Schools Founder

Andrew Denford Founder and Chairman of F1 In Schools, in presenting the winning trophy, congratulated the overall winners while also expressing his delight at the very high standards displayed by all the finalists. "The commitment shown by both the teachers and the students is mind-blowing", he said. "The high standards attained give us great confidence for the future development of science and technology in Ireland. We see this as a creative opportunity to promote the technological skills of' designs second level students."

All the participating teams have been perfecting their designs, portfolios and presentation skills since competing in the regional finals last February and March. Using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create virtual 3D models of their cars, the teams collaborated with 3rd Level F1 Make Centres on their manufacture. The colleges used their special milling equipment to convert the designs into real model F1 racers. The cars, measuring about 25cms and made of balsa wood, can reach scale speeds of 350km/h.

In addition to racing head to head, the competing teams were judged on the quality of engineering, portfolio, resource management, marketing, graphic design and sponsorship activities and on a verbal presentation of their work.

For many of the students, Formula 1 in Schools Technology Challenge powered in Ireland by Irish Computer Society, has been the highlight of the school year to date.

Team Kestrel from St Paul's Community College in Waterford who walked away with two awards on the day, have been competing in the competition since it launched in Ireland in 2006. "Learning how to work as a team and improving our computer skills is what we achieve from this amazing competition, we have great fun on the day and we can't wait to come back and try for the top prize again next year."

Irish Computer Society CEO, Jim Friars added: "This is the fourth year of the Challenge in Ireland and it just gets bigger and better. The quality of the students' work is truly impressive and it has been encouraging to witness the teams immersing themselves wholeheartedly in the worlds of technology and engineering. Schools see the value of incorporating the challenge into their extra-curricular activities, and we believe it is the perfect preparation for 't4' Technology subjects, which are now being examined in secondary schools across the country."

25 January 2010.../Student teams from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England are celebrating winning through to the F1 in Schools 2010 World Championships which will be held in Singapore in September this year, coinciding with the 2010 Singtel Singapore Formula One Grand Prix.

Team Blink, a team from St. Ailbe's Secondary School in Tipperary Town (Irish 2009 National Champions), Team Carbon from Regent House Grammar School, Newtownards, Northern Ireland, Exceleration, a team from Lochgelly High School in Scotland; the top Welsh team from Ysgol Botwnnog, Fflam; and Dynamic from St. John Payne Catholic Comprehensive School, Chelmsford, Essex will compete at this prestigious event. It will feature over 30 student teams from around the globe competing for the unique Bernie Ecclestone trophy and coveted scholarships to City University, London.

Chairman and Founder of F1 in Schools, Andrew Denford says of the news, “These students can look forward to a once in a lifetime experience at the World Championships. The highlight of last year’s event for many students was meeting Lewis Hamilton when he came along to meet each team and present the winning team’s trophy. This was the icing on the cake for the students after three days of intense pressure competing for the World Championship title, as well as making new friends and seeing the sights of London, which was the venue for 2009.

He continues, “We are combining this year’s World Championships with the Singtel Singapore F1 Grand Prix and we hope that the students will have the chance to experience this fantastic occasion while they are visiting this beautiful country. Formula One provides the inspiration for F1 in Schools and to have a glimpse of the sport, up close, is a very special opportunity for the students.”

The World Championship event pits the national champions against each other, with a panel of judges reviewing the work of each team, from their engineering approach through to marketing strategy, as well as closely scrutinising their cars. One of the key activities for all the students is racing the car against the other school teams in the time trials. While in Singapore the students will also be given a cultural experience, visiting many of the attractions of this Asian island.

Current World Champions are Koni Kats from St. Davids Secondary School Greystones, Co. Wicklow.

F1 in Schools reaches out to more than 15 million students around the world, introducing them to Formula 1 and using its popularity to encourage them to consider science, technology, engineering and mathematics as a career. Students are given a brief to design a scale model compressed air powered F1 Car of the future using CAD/CAM. Cars are then manufactured on a CNC machine. The cars race on a 20 metre track, covering the distance in just over one second, a speed barrier which is yet to be broken by any student team since it was set by Team FUGA from Northern Ireland at the 2007 World Championships with a time of 1.020 seconds.

NI schools on fast track to success

Teams of students from Belfast and Newtownards were top in the Northern Ireland regional finals of the F1 in Schools competition held over the Christmas break.

Team Carbon (Regent House Grammar School, Newtownards) took overall victory in the Formula 1 car class and Team Zeiges (also from Regent House) earned top honours in the Rookie class. Both are through to the UK national finals.

Regent House Grammar School collected three other awards: fastest race car, best engineered car and best verbal presentation.

Two Belfast schools won awards with 2Fast4U, a team from Royal Belfast Academical Institute, taking the Best Team Identity and Best Display and Portfolio Awards. The Best Team Sponsorship and Marketing award was won by Victoria Vipers, a team from Victoria College, Belfast.
